Ellen Grossman Topography Of Impulses Statement

After receiving a BFA from Cooper Union in 1974, I focused on

three-dimensional work with emphasis on how surfaces interface with supportive and/or resistant forces. This arose from exposure to concepts then emerging of ecological interconnectedness.

For sculpture I sewed sheets of aluminum screening into shapes suggestive of flying carpets or zooming boats or sleek airplanes. These were embedded in undulating fields representing air or water currents. 

As sculptural objects these vehicles can seem to be trapped in viscous fluid or floating in a supportive current. Depending on the mindset of the viewer. 

My drawings are studies in the build up of topography. They relate to geologic forces.  When my hand falters a little or if I impulsively deviate from exactly following a line already laid down then the subsequent echoing lines form rippling surface contours. A visible topography of impulses.

This work has been shown extensively in galleries mostly in the New York City area and also in France and Italy.

In 2011 and again in 2017 I was awarded New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) fellowship grants in support of these drawings.
